A review of Wasted by Marya Hornbacher

Why do peoples opinions influence the way some people think of themselves ? Marya is a young lady that goes through alot of ups and downs in her life, and she's not sure why. Wasted by Mayrya Hornbacher teaches the reader to be their own person. You should always think highly of yourself because if you don't no one else would and all that will do is bring you down. You have to be confident to succeed and do well in life. In this book and in the article "The Barbie" because they didn't believe in themselves or was influenced by other peoples actions they ended up in bad situations even though they could have been very benign people.

Success to me is when life is good and you have no struggles or worries. For me to succeed I have to attend college to forfill my dream of becoming a pediatrician. In the book when Marya started to look down on herself is what made me think that she is much better then that and she could be out doing and thinking about other things with life other then wondering if she is fat or not. One of the main obstacles that I could encounter before reaching my goals is; not being confident, no diploma, being brought down, or not staying focused. A step that I have totake to reach my goal is to graduate high school and go to college. When Marya started to get focused and make a good path for herself is when started to inspre me to go to school and do well in life. Even though I've been through alot that is no excuse to keep going and make a good path for myself.

Written in sequence order about the author Marya Hornbacher's life and the things that she encountered and the way she felt about certain things. In a way it seemed as if it was a diary she had written in. The chapters start from when she was a young child and goes on until she is a adult. In the beginning of the book it starts off about her parents and how she feels about their relationship and goes on about how she feels about her self and her self confidence. At the very ending of the book it tells about her out look about life and how she is still not satisfied with her weight but is much happier with life. "Never, never underestimate the power of desire.

", through out the last pages of the book she says that all the things she has been through has changed her life and how it made her become a more benevolent person. The writing can be very powerful and very moving for a person that is not very confident about themselves. Even in the words twisting and shape-lifting in the sentence "It is the distance of marred memory, of a twisted and shape-shifting past."(Hornbacher285). They bothhave the meaning of crazy or wild to describe her past.

In "The Barbie" and "Wasted", I learned that being influenced by others could turn your life down a dark road. How Marya adepted to her Bulimic condition and how
Edgar Valdez adepted to his fast money because of selling drugs habit made them both make bad decisions and those decisions changed their way of living and state of mind. Through out the book I always wondered if she ever felt very ravenous because she was never eating, basically starving herself. Because of her parents it made her very hostile so she always stayed to herself and seemed so confused.

If you have ever been through many obstacles and is just confused about certian situations, then this is the book for you. It makes ou think and realize things that other people are going through and how their situation in some way relate to your tragedy. I would definetly read other books by this author because her books seem to relate to real life problems. People let other peoples opinions get to them because they don't know how to have self confidence and think highly of themselves so they let everything that is said to them hurt their feelings and bring down their self-esteem.
